War Of The Starlets: Nicki Minaj VS Rihanna

Rihanna might be the music princess for a while now, but after five albums and a LOT of fashion transformation, people are beginning to ask questions.  First it’s about her newly-dyed flaming red hair… and next: will she stand the new wave of artists coming her way?  Or better yet: will Rihanna survive against the new notoriety of up-and-coming rapper Nicki Minaj?

Hip Hop Wired reported recently that Nicki Minaj made Billboard history as she was announced as the first female rapper to have 7 entries on the “Hot 100″.  Minaj lent her rapping skills on seven songs on Nielsen Soundscan’s tally of the 200 best selling songs of 2010 with a total of 4,928,000 copies sold.  Maybe that’s still far-fetched from Rihanna’s recent collab with Eminem on “Love the Way You Lie” which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and making her the female artist with the fifth-most number-ones in Billboard chart’s history, but we see Minaj got huge potential to catch up.

Although musically (and appearance-wise) Nicki Minaj is more often compared to the Queen Bee of hip hop: Lil’ Kim, this time we thought we’d do it a little differently.  The hip hop princess and the pop sensation each has similar sides, and from where we’re sitting, Minaj might have left her Lil’ Kim days behind and taking fashion cues from a mash-up of stars, including Rihanna.  And guess what, there might be some Minaj flavor in recent Rihanna looks.

In her early photos, Nicki Minaj offered provocative outfits and poses to her potential fans.  But in a rather short period of time, she quickly realized the impact she was making to younger girls and in an interview with ‘Interview’ magazine, Nicki stated that she’s toning the sexy down.

“I made a conscious decision to try to tone down the sexiness, I want people—especially young girls—to know that in life, nothing is going to be based on sex appeal. You’ve got to have something else to go with that.”

On the other hand, although starting to jet off to the skies with her third studio album, “Good Girl Gone Bad”, fashion-wise Rihanna showed off her ‘bad’ side in 2009, somewhere around her domestic violence incident with Chris Brown.  We’re liking her constant transformations, as Rihanna knows no boundaries when it comes to fashion.  Her latest flaming red hair which many suspect as a promotional tool for her newest album “Loud”, makes Rihanna a favorite object of critique, after dodging the bullets for years.

So, SoJones readers, what’s your take on Rihanna’s fashion statements and Nicki Minaj who seems to be catching up with her -in a fast pace?

Nicki Minaj’s upcoming album “Pink Friday” will drop November 23rd, 2010 and now available at Amazon.com.  Rihanna’s album “Loud” is also available for purchase at Amazon.com!
