Up Close: Lotuff & Clegg English Briefcase

The recent infatuation with all things “heritage” has, for what it’s worth, certainly brought with it a distinct shrift in focus for both producer and consumer to products that will provide some element of longevity.  Whether you admire this movement or not, it’s hard to argue against the increase in quality as a positive byproduct.  As a brand, the Massachusetts-based Lotuff & Clegglaunched in 2008doesn’t exactly have much heritage to exploit, but they’ve made it clear that their products are designed to age gracefully and last a lifetime.

This intention is perhaps best displayed in their English Leather Briefcase.  Not only is this briefcase painstakingly made by hand using exceptional vegetable tanned leather hides, but the functionality here was clearly taken into account when this bag was conceived.  And it’s important that it was, since a briefcase frequently does double duty as both a daily carrier and organizer. So more so than any other bag bag, even tote or duffel, clear and well-conceived functionality is paramount to its success.  The design is gorgeous in its simplicity, and with no exterior branding to be seen, it is clear that this is designer for  the kind of guy that plans to hold on to it for generations.

As with all Lotuff & Clegg bags, and especially with this particular model, sturdy construction provides the backbone that the aesthetics work off of.  The pure brass buckles, rivets, and clips that are all there to insure durability supply a classic contrast that evokes an old school sentimentality.  Instead of a center closure that you might find with most briefcases, two evenly spaced, fully leather straps secure it, ensuring that even on its most fullest of days the bag stays well-girdled.  For organization, there are four large compartments: three in the interior and one on the backside.  Laptops, papers, textbooks, Kindles, notebooks, iPads should have no difficulty fitting into this briefcase oat any given time, and it’s very  possible to carry all of these together.  In the interior, there is an additional central zipper compartment as well as various smaller compartments for pens, business cards, smaller note pads and the like.  In other words, this briefcase is definitely designed to be a daily workhorse for business or for class.

Functionality, longevity, and classic beauty are the keywords here with the Lotuff & Clegg English Leather Briefcase.  From either a business standpoint or from the perspective of a student, there is very little this daily bag can’t do.  It’s made for getting the job done effectively and in style, and should do so for decades.
