With the first official day of winter only two weeks away, we figured it was time to put together a Piece by Piece about staying warm. While many of your good friends will be going the impenetrable outerwear route, we prefer layering as our means of shielding ourselves from the cold. A North Face jacket may do a good job of keep you warm, but it won’t compare in fit or style to some quality layering.
There a few tricks that are more effective than throwing on two shirts when winter comes around. This is especially powerful in the case of the corduroy shirt. A nice brown corduroy shirt adds some great color to a look and does great things for your core temperature without creating too much bulk. Put it over a good sport shirt and you’ll really have a great inner layer to work with.
From there you ‘ll want to find a nice season sport coat and some heavy wool trousers. We love the look of this green windowpane jacket by Paul Stuart for its slimmer cut and tonal color scheme. J. Crew rolled out with some very respectable donegal tweed trousers, which ought to do the trick for your lower half–you may want to pair them with some heavy socks to keep your feet from freezing, though.
With the base of your outfit built, it’s time to consider the accessories. The cold weather begs you to put on a scarf, some gloves, and a hat–so why not oblige. You’ll want to invest in something classic and for this we suggest heading to J. Press. They’re brilliant with accessories and their heavy knit caps and cashmere gloves are just what the doctor ordered this season. While they do have a great selection of scarves, we would opt for this subdued tartan scarf by the Italian brand Pria.
