MTV Video Music Awards: A VMA Fashion Retrospective

The MTV Video Music Awards hit us once again last weekend, and the interwebs are all atwitter about the fashion hits, misses and Kanye and Taylor’s kiss and makeup session. Let’s now take a journey back in time -and by back in time we meant honoring those who paved the way for Lady Gaga’s crazy carnivore outfits, and revisit some of the most memorable fashion items ever televised.

Gentlemen On Deck

Andre 3000 and Big Boi started the gentleman-look long before Kanye West did with his Rosewood thing.  In the 2003 VMA, they appeared in a set of 1920′s suits and made a strong fashion statement on the red carpet.

Denim Divas

When Destiny’s Child was still intact, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams were almost always dressed by Tina Knowles as their personal fashion stylist.  But at the MTV VMA 2001 the trio was denim-clad, sporting customized Levi’s and they’re lookin’ HOT!

Foolery or Art?

The line between downright ridiculous and artful is so thin at the MTV VMAs and Lady Gaga has been the epitome of all things… weird.  In the 2009 VMA, the singer rocked a red… something -as we can’t really put a name on the costume.  Foolery or art?  You decide.

While we can’t decide what to call Lady Gaga’s costume, here’s another case for you.  Lil Mama wore a baby costume to the 2007 VMAs.  Foolery or art?  Go figure.

The Transformers

The MTV VMAs are not just for silly costumes and high end fashion, there are actually some stars who improve their looks on the red carpet from year to year.  Who could forget Gwen Stefani’s blue hair on the MTV VMA 1998?

She looked like a fashion trainwreck back then, but give her seven years and what do you get?  A dazzling femme fatale in the same award show in 2005.  Fierce!

Gwen Stefani isn’t the only one who underwent a major transformation on the VMA’s red carpet.  Rihanna has also showed some significant transformation -although she looked faboulous since day one.  Here’s Rihanna in her umbrella-toting days, rocking a hot pink dress on the 2007 VMA.

And here she is a year later, with a look that says “I’m the coolest girl in town.”  Check the rising confidence in her attitude.

Smokin’ Hot Ladies

With these girls, there are no other words but HOT.  SoJones picks Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Mya, Jordin Sparks, Katy Perry and Eva Longoria as the best VMA Hotties ever.

Here’s Beyonce post the heroic act of letting Taylor Swift have her moment after being interrupted by Kanye West at the 2009 VMA.  And here’s Taylor, just arrived at the show… not knowing what was about to happen.  She looked like a goddess.

Here’s Mya, one of the classic hottie looks from the 2003 VMA.  Don’t know how she does it, but this picture was taken on the red carpet and she’s looking mighty sexy.

American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks stole the spotlight with this cute black number and a hot pink sash.  She looked both prom and red carpet ready, but we love her nonetheless!

The next VMA attendee who always look super sexy is Katy Perry, and at the 2009 VMAs, she donned a glittery silver number and shall we say she’s glowing?

And last but not least, we seriously think that she inspired all the leotard-based show costumes donned by today’s mega stars:  Eva Longoria and her swimsuit at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards.

Can’t wait for this year’s VMA.  Check back in here for more coverage about this year’s VMA fashion trends and faux-pas!
